24/7 counseling support

ProtoCall is a new initiative by the Wellness Center that provides students with prompt and effective mental health support, assessment and referrals after hours, on weekends, during academic breaks, and in the summer.

Counseling Services at Denison has pursued a partnership with ProtoCall. This is a service staffed by licensed mental health clinicians holding master’s degrees. ProtoCall is a service that is used by colleges and universities throughout the United States, including many of Denison’s peers.

To access a mental health provider after hours, on weekends, and during academic breaks, students will call 740-587-6647 to receive immediate support from a licensed mental health clinician. All calls are free and confidential.

The caller will immediately be connected to a licensed clinician who is familiar with the Denison campus and who can provide therapeutic consultation and intervention options. Counseling Services’ confidentiality policies and procedures apply to any conversation with ProtoCall mental health clinicians. Counseling Services will receive a report the next day so they can follow up with the student as needed. Members of the Denison Counseling Services team will be contacted in emergency situations requiring in-person engagement, as determined by a mental health professional.

ProtoCall works in concert with counseling staff and provides confidential reports to our counseling team members at the end of every student support session. If the student is connected with a Denison clinician, a ProtoCall report may be discussed during the student’s next scheduled appointment. If the student is not connected with a Denison clinician, the ProtoCall report will prompt follow-up communication from a member of the Denison counseling team.

There are three outcomes to a ProtoCall support session:

  1. The student’s needs are met; Denison’s counseling team receives a call summary report to be added to the student’s treatment file.
  2. The student’s needs are met, and ProtoCall recommends a follow-up appointment; Denison’s counseling team receives a call summary report to be added to the student’s treatment file. Follow-up appointments will be the first available appointment.
  3. The student’s needs exceed the support ProtoCall can provide and Campus Safety is contacted to coordinate transport to Licking Memorial Hospital by ambulance; Denison’s counseling team receives a call summary report to be added to the student’s treatment file.

The addition of ProtoCall will help Denison ensure high quality, efficient, and confidential access to mental health resources and support for students 24/7/365. This service, along with traditional individual counseling sessions, group and workshop offerings, and wellness initiatives will further expand the ways in which we provide holistic support of mental health and wellness.
