Like any other clinic or doctor’s office, at appointment check-in students will provide their insurance card, along with a form of payment for copay (no cash or checks accepted). Insurance will be billed directly. In the past, students had to initiate contact with Denison University’s Student Accounts to submit charges from labs, prescriptions, procedures, etc., to their insurance companies. With this transition, we are streamlining this process, and the clinic will automatically submit charges to your insurance. This should make the process much easier for students.

- Drivers license, state-issued ID, or passport
- Insurance card
- Credit or debit card to process co-payments if your insurance requires co-payments
- List of current medications and medical history

- Your nurse practitioner or physician will provide a treatment plan for you.
- You will be directed to register with MyChart.
- The bill for your visit will be submitted to the insurance you provided at check in.
- Once the bill is processed with insurance, any amount that you are responsible for (ex. co-insurance, deductible) will be billed to you directly from Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. The bill will come to the mailing address you provided at check in.

There are two main differences:
- Your check-in process will be slightly different, and you’ll need to bring in some additional information.
- After your appointment, your insurance will be billed directly. You won’t need to submit documentation to your insurance company or ask Student Accounts to submit a claim on your behalf.

For urgent concerns, same-day hours are offered each weekday. You can call ahead or simply walk into the wellness center during this time to meet with a counselor.

You can call Denison’s 24/7 Crisis Line at (740) 587-6647. These calls are free and confidential. You can use this number at any point during the year (including academic breaks) and access it while at home, on campus, or studying abroad.

There is no cost for meeting with one of our psychiatric providers. However, you may need to pay for medication prescribed by our providers. Learn more about costs and insurance »

Counseling services are confidential. This means that we will not confirm or deny your appointment attendance or what you share with a clinician without your expressed consent. If you want us to share information with parents, professors, or others, you can sign a Release of Information form that specifies what information we can share and with whom we can share it.
Limitations to confidentiality mainly involve safety-related concerns, and include:
- Imminent and foreseeable risk of suicide/ending your own life
- Imminent and foreseeable risk of harm to others
- Disclosures of abuse or neglect of a child, an elderly or disabled individual, or animal
- Disclosures of hazing as defined by Collin’s Law and Denison’s Hazing Prevention Policy
- As directed by subpoenas/court orders

You may choose to meet with counseling on an as needed basis or have ongoing counseling through the wellness center.

We recognize that sometimes you may not feel connected with your initial counselor. We want to help you develop self-advocacy, and so we encourage you to share feedback with your therapist about approaches or techniques that are helpful and unhelpful for you. This feedback allows us to adjust our approach and also helps us to pair you with another available clinician as desired.

You can access information about your appointments in the MyWellness Portal. If you miss a class due to an appointment, you can access and share your appointment information with the professor.

Based on guidance from the state licensure board, the Counseling Services staff cannot provide letters of support for ESAs. View the Emotional Support Animal Policy.

Our clinical team includes professionals from the fields of counseling, social work, and psychology. All of our clinicians are licensed to practice in their respective fields within Ohio. Read our staff contacts page for more about each of our clinicians.

Counseling and psychiatric services in the Hoaglin Wellness Center are not billed to insurance.

Counseling check-in processes remain the same.
For Parents, Faculty, & Staff

Although faculty or parents cannot schedule an appointment for a student, you may choose to have a student call to schedule an appointment during your meeting with them (office hours, advising meetings, etc.). If you need to make an immediate referral for a student in crisis, you can walk with the student to the wellness office or call Campus Safety to see if a ride can be arranged.
We ask that you please provide us with a brief consultation or reason for the referral before our meeting with the student so that we can fully assess a student’s level of need and risk of harm concerns.

It depends.
Counseling is a confidential service for students – meaning that we can neither confirm nor deny a student’s participation in counseling with third parties (including faculty, staff, parents, etc.). Students may sign a release of information (ROI) allowing our office to share certain information with other offices or individuals. This release is valid for one academic school year, and permission can also be revoked in writing by a student at any point.
Please know that although we cannot confirm or deny information without a release, parents, faculty, and staff can share information with the counseling staff as desired. Students can access these ROI forms in their wellness portal.
