Global Commerce: WE-Building Certificate Program (815344)

Global Commerce: WE-Building Certificate Program

Global Commerce WE-Building Certificate Program
The global economy is more diverse and more interconnected than ever before which means that having skills to interact successfully with a wide group of people across language, nationality, race, ethnicity, age, gender, gender-orientation and many other factors is mission critical to any professional in the 21st century marketplace. The goal of the Global Commerce WE-Building certificate program is to prepare sophomore and junior majors to be successful when they enter the workforce by developing a WE-mindset through fostering awareness, engaging in self-assessment and taking action to bridge US versus THEM gaps on campus. Participating students will receive a certificate in “WE-Building” to signify the time and effort put into the program.
The WE-Building certificate program will be facilitated by alumna Laura Kriska and will be based on her new book The Business of WE (HarperCollins, January 2021) which provides a practical roadmap for creating trust with those who are different. The program is comprised of FOUR 90-minutes sessions spread across fall semester; participants must attend all 4 sessions:
Session One: Sunday, September 12 / 3:00 – 4:30 PM / via Zoom
Session Two: Sunday, October 10 / 3:00 – 4:30 PM / via Zoom
Session Three: Sunday, November 14 / 3:00 – 4:30 PM / via Zoom
Session Four: Thursday, December 2 / 4:30 – 6:30 PM / In Person in Burton Morgan – dinner included
Eligibility: Sophomore and Junior Global Commerce majors. Program capacity is capped at 20; a waitlist will be created if necessary.
Workshop Facilitator: Laura Kriska ’87, Cross-Cultural Consultant & Author
Laura Kriska is an internationally recognized expert and leading consultant on cross-cultural relations with more than 30 years of experience bridging gaps in diverse workplaces. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies on four continents, helping thousands of business leaders and professionals build trust across Us versus Them differences based on nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, age, or any factor of identity.
Born in Tokyo to missionary parents, Laura was raised in a white suburban community in Ohio, surrounded by people who looked, sounded, and prayed like she did. Thanks to her parents’ adventurous spirit, she grew up with a fascination for different cultures and a strong attachment to Japan. During college, she spent a year studying in Tokyo and learning to speak the language. After receiving her BA in Japanese Studies from Denison University, she began her career in Japan. She was the first American woman to work in Honda Motor Company’s Tokyo headquarters, as an assistant to a senior executive. This experience is the basis of her first book, The Accidental Office Lady. During the first week of working in Japan she made one of the biggest mistakes of her professional life. It was a painful lesson but one that informed the WE-building message in her new book The Business of WE. It is a common mistake that happens a lot especially when working with people from different backgrounds. The lesson she learned is more relevant today for anyone going out into our increasingly diverse and inter-connected workplaces.
