Poised atop a hill overlooking Granville, Ohio, and the surrounding countryside, Denison boasts one of America’s most picturesque college campuses — a distinction that has earned it recognition as one of the nation’s most beautiful academic settings. Denison’s campus, with its natural beauty and thoughtful architectural design, was recently listed among the top five in U.S. News & World Report’s list of beautiful college campuses.
Denison’s campus is a partnership between nature and the campus master plan, offering a sense of beauty and community. Designed by the famed landscape architectural firm of Frederick Law Olmsted Sons, whose founder was the designer of New York City’s Central Park, some of the great Chicago lakefront parks, and distinguished college campuses such as Stanford and Wellesley, produced an innovative design for Denison. Created in 1916, the master plan fosters growth while creating a charming, functional environment, with outdoor spaces that encourage connection.
Denison has won numerous awards for the beauty of its campus. In recent years, the National Association for Olmsted Parks awarded Denison second place, tied for the national with the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Designated a Tree Campus by the Arbor Foundation, Denison’s grounds are also a certified arboretum. The college’s 350-acre Biological Reserve is a collection of forest, pond, and meadow habitats, crisscrossed with trails for students and the community to enjoy.
Surrounded by mature trees, the Academic Quad serves as a dynamic living room where students gather between classes, toss frisbees, or lounge on Adirondack chairs with friends. Residential quads nestled in pockets across The Hill are welcoming and intimate. The Arts Quad, a vibrant collaboration of architectural styles connected by green spaces that double as performance spaces, promotes creativity across the arts. The Athletics Quad, anchored by the Mitchell Center, with its 200-meter indoor track and Olympic-size pool, Deeds Field, and the Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium, supports 26 varsity athletic teams with 192 NCAC championships under their collective belt.
Denison’s inclusion among America’s most beautiful college campuses is recognition of a rare combination of natural beauty, architectural distinction, and thoughtful design. From its commanding views to its intimate gathering spaces, from historic buildings to cutting-edge facilities, Denison’s campus doesn’t just house an education — it enhances and elevates it. For students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike, the beauty of Denison’s campus serves as a daily reminder that where we learn matters nearly as much as what we learn.
