Create. Collaborate. Transform.

The Eisner Center catalyzes Denison University’s mission of providing the breadth and depth of a liberal arts education to our students. A hub of energy and creativity, it’s where talent meets opportunity, and every rehearsal, design, and collaboration is part of the learning that brings ambitious performances to life.

Teaching & learning

The Eisner Center is home to the Departments of Dance, Music, and Theatre, creating a dynamic, interactive space where students can collaborate across disciplines and learn from experienced professionals in the performing arts industry.

Music Theatre

Combine music and theatre in creative ways, from traditional musical theatre to contemporary collaborations of sound and movement. Focus your studies in performance, composition, directing, or any other area that interests you.

Denison Museum

Infusing the arts across our community through world-class exhibitions, this teaching museum, located within the Eisner Center, engages in and supports learning and inquiry.

Professional Mentorship & Creative Partnerships

From Denison’s Artists-in-Residence program, which brings acclaimed artists to campus, to our faculty and a full-time professional staff that serves as the producing partner for our academic programs, the Eisner Center provides innovative spaces to give students hands-on opportunities to learn from and engage with artists.

Through directed studies, assistantships, and immersive lab experiences in Eisner’s fully equipped scene shop (for both wood and metal fabrication), extensive costume shop, and cutting-edge lighting and audio systems, students gain practical skills, artistic confidence, and the collaborative mindset essential for a wide variety of careers in the performing arts.

Students from across the university also participate in paid internships at the Denison Museum, gaining transferable skills useful in a wide range of careers.

Performance & Creative Spaces

The Eisner Center houses state-of-the-art stages and rehearsal spaces, numerous classrooms and offices, and many open spaces configured to encourage interaction. By bringing dance, music, and theatre together in one building, the space strengthens teaching and learning through cross-disciplinary collaboration among students, faculty, and staff.

Sharon Martin Hall

Sharon Martin Hall

Sharon Martin Hall is the crown jewel of the Eisner Center. Named for Denison Trustee Sharon Smith Martin, a member of the Denison Class of 1965 and an ardent supporter of the arts, the 360-seat proscenium theater has been built with the ability to accommodate a wide variety of performances. Featuring multiple stage and seating configurations, a fully automated fly system, state-of-the-art lighting, audio, and video capabilities, and adjustable acoustics, Sharon Martin Hall is a flexible and adaptable performance venue that allows for intimate audience experiences, engaging creative work, and unique learning opportunities.

Each year, Sharon Martin Hall is home to a diverse array of events by students, faculty, and guest artists. From classic orchestral performances to the TUTTI Festival of new works, to jazz, wind, and choral performances, Sharon Martin Hall features a wide range of music concerts. The theatre, music theatre, and dance programs all partner with the Eisner Center and regularly produce plays, musicals, and dance concerts in Sharon Martin Hall, providing students with educational opportunities to hone their craft in both performance and production techniques.

Classroom & rehearsal spaces

Large rehearsal space

The large rehearsal space

Serving as the main classroom for the Department of Theatre, the large rehearsal space is built for movement and experimentation. With a two-story glass wall, allowing a ‘peek into the art-making,’ the Large Rehearsal Room is the primary rehearsal space for theatre and music theatre productions. The footprint is the same size as the Sharon Martin Hall stage, which allows scenery to be taped-out and blocking rehearsals to happen in full scale before a production moves into the performance space. Equipped with rehearsal furniture and lighting and audio equipment, the large rehearsal room is also a performance venue for student works, theatre-making projects, as well as senior research performances.

Behind-the-Scenes Spaces

Theatre and Dance Library

Theatre and Dance Library (Eisner 143)

Serving as a library, as well as a meeting and study space, the Theatre and Dance Library features an extensive collection of scripts, research materials, and production archives.

“The relevance of the performing arts in our individual lives and in society cannot be over-emphasized. The arts are relational. They can unite us across differences; they can give us new insights, and they should exist in an inter-disciplinary environment. There has never been a time when the arts are more important than today.”
Michael D. Eisner ’64, Denison Life Trustee
