Students provide at least 15 hours of volunteer service to local non-profit agencies while simultaneously identifying community needs, establishing funding criteria, and engaging in group-decision-making as part of the course.
This year, five Denison classes participated in the program. After volunteering all semester, students and faculty together presented the organizations with checks. Gina Dow’s Development of Children with Special Needs class presented a check to Flying Colors Preschool; the ProTeen Center, which helps teen-aged student achieve their GED, received a check from Emily Nemeth’s Critical Pedagogy class; Sally Bulford taught two sections of a First Year Seminar called Voices of the Earth, her classes presented checks to the Licking County Land Trust, Ohio Nature Education, the Sixth Street Garden of Hope Initiative and the Licking County Food Council. Finally, Fadhel Kaboub’s Urban and Region Economics class presented checks to the Freedom School of Licking County, the Humane Society, the Coalition for Housing and the SPARK group.
