The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship for community-committed college students from Campus Compact member institutions. The fellowship honors the late Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders, who was a tireless advocate for civic engagement in higher education.

In the spirit of Dr. Newman’s leadership, Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors nominate one student who has demonstrated a capacity for leadership and an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country and abroad.

This year’s winner is Hannah Wedepohl ‘23. Hannah is a junior who has distinguished herself with an unprecedented commitment to serving her peers through campus governance as well as voter education and registration. Hannah’s efforts, along with her fellow DU Votes Coordinators, resulted in Denison being recognized by the ALL IN Challenge for our 2020 voter registration and engagement efforts. DU Votes ensured that 99.6% of eligible Denison students were registered to vote in the 2020 Presidential Election.

Hannah also serves Denison’s community directly through campus governance as both the Public Relations Chair and a Class of 2023 Senator. As a senator, Hannah is a member of the University’s Academic Affairs Council, where she represents students’ voice in creating academic policies and procedures.
