Nancy Tran, a data analytics and sustainability and environmental studies double major, won first place in the ASA Video Communication Contest.

Her winning video explored how soil stores more carbon than all the plants in the atmosphere combined and how her team’s statistical modeling of data from over 40 sites in tropical Southeast Asia helps uncover what truly shapes carbon storage in soils.

Her work, supervised by Associate Professor Sarah Supp and Assistant Professor Zhe Wang in the data analytics department, highlights how data analytics and environmental science come together to address urgent global challenges. Tran’s research on soil organic carbon comparing different agricultural management systems is part of her continuing year-long senior research project.
