What you’ll study as a journalism major

How to talk to people from all walks of life and tell a well-crafted story in print and digital formats in a variety of story forms: written, audio, mini-doc. You will have opportunities to get off The Hill and talk to real people and report about interesting things.

Build your core

Learn to research, report, and write news stories. Build your fact-checking and interviewing skills. Learn to talk with people from all walks of life.

Explore through electives

Learn narrative storytelling through experiential reporting classes; do investigative journalism; study ethics and empathy; take a journalism lab to explore new ways of doing local journalism on a micro level.

Apply your knowledge

Collaborate with a faculty advisor and create a senior research project based on your personal interests and goals. Become a reporter on campus and beyond.

The Reporting Project

Get real-world journalism experience as a paid reporter for The Reporting Project, our award-winning news source for Licking County. Our students have broken major local stories, and some are picked up by other established Ohio media outlets such as The Columbus Dispatch and Newark Advocate.

Build your byline

In addition to getting professional-level newsroom experience at The Reporting Project, you may decide to report, write, and edit for the student-run newspaper, The Denisonian; offer your science writing to the intercollegiate magazine, The Synapse; or host a show on the student-run Doobie Radio.

Denison journalism majors have interned with US News & World Report, WHIZ TV, Harm Reduction Ohio, Zeno Group, Racepoint Global, Akron Stories, WYSO, Ohio Magazine, Versatile Words, Ohio History Connection, WOSU, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Columbus Dispatch, Newark Advocate, Story magazine, and the West Michigan Environmental Council on Wildlife.

Study Abroad

Study journalism in your chosen region to enhance your language skills and build your career network. Conduct research on a traditional semester abroad or take a summer internship in another country.

Summer Scholars

Delve into independent research through our Summer Scholars program. All Summer Scholars receive a stipend and a housing allowance plus supplemental funds for research expenses.
