Over seventy years ago, believing that no liberal arts education could be complete unless it included an appreciation for the arts, Denison Trustee Emeritus and fine art aficionado Edmund G. Burke agreed to spearhead an effort to gather an art collection at Denison for the use of students, friends of the University, and surrounding communities. Denison University’s budding art collection was housed in the Art Treasure Room on the fourth floor of the William Howard Doane Library until the collection was greatly expanded in the 1960s and 1970s, through donation and purchase of art and artifacts from Panama, Burma, and China. Edmund G. Burke’s legacy persists through a generous bequest that culminated in construction of The Burke Hall of Music and Art (now part of the Michael D. Eisner Center for the Performing Arts), which opened its doors in October 1973, housing the gallery and collection, the Black box theater, and the recital hall. Today, the permanent collection consists of over 9,000 objects dating from circa 1500 B.C.E. to the present from over 300 alumni, friends, and scholars.

Burke started a tradition of alumni sharing cultural and fine art objects from around the world with the Denison Community. This exhibition features three Denison Alumni—Daniel Sheets Dye (Class of 1907), Helen Hunt (Class of 1910), Clyde Keeler (Class of 1923)—who helped create our vibrant, eclectic permanent collection through their diverse interests, research, and scholarship. Learn about these fascinating objects, their history, and the collection’s evolution at Denison.

As a teaching museum established in 2006, Denison Museum engages in and supports learning and inquiry in the liberal arts. Cultural heritage and fine art materials, both borrowed and drawn from the University’s permanent collection, serve as significant components in the University’s academic curriculum and form the basis of exhibitions and programs. Denison Museum is committed to caring for and managing its collection and resources for the benefit of a diverse audience that extends beyond students and faculty, including visitors and learners from around the world.
