What you’ll study as an Educational Studies major
Study education as a social institution and analyze teaching through an interdisciplinary lens. Add a second major in an intended content area if you plan to teach.
Start with a strong foundation
Learn the theoretical and social foundations of teaching and learning, and how to apply them in a classroom. Hone your “tools of inquiry,” essential to any career but especially in teaching: oral communication, analysis, synthesis, and critique.
Build your core
Delve into psychology and qualitative inquiry. Learn research methods and statistics. Explore how teaching strategies differ across age groups — from early childhood to adult learners — and gain experience working with students and teachers in nearby school and community settings.
Master your knowledge
Take advantage of opportunities for directed and independent study. Explore electives on topics such as special education, schooling around the world, and the remarkable journey children take as they learn how to read.
Jobs as an educational studies major
An Educational Studies degree will prepare you for teaching careers in elementary and secondary schools as well as in fields such as educational publishing, social work, and business-related education. See where our grads have landed.
Career communities
Educational Studies majors often join one or more of our career communities, such as the Nonprofit, Education, & Government community.
Career Exploration
Through the Knowlton Center for Career Exploration and its training center, Denison Edge, career coaches help you prepare for the next step after college, and industry experts help you acquire specialized skills and certifications.
Beyond the Classroom
Internships
Explore career paths through an internship (or two!). Denison Educational Studies majors have interned with K-12 schools, local libraries, IT consultants, educational law firms, and more.
Study Abroad
Pursue educational studies in your chosen region to enhance your language skills and build your career network. Conduct research on a traditional semester abroad or take a summer internship in another country.
Summer Scholars
Delve into independent research through our Summer Scholars program. All Summer Scholars receive a stipend and a housing allowance plus supplemental funds for research expenses.
