'Decolonize to Decarbonize: The Geopolitics of Just Transition in the Global South'

The Global Studies Seminar presents “Decolonize to Decarbonize: The Geopolitics of Just Transition in the Global South” by Denison University’s Associate Professor of Economics Fadhel Kaboub. 

The presentation argues that the process of decarbonizing the system cannot be achieved under a colonial global economic architecture. Colonialism imposed three fundamental economic roles on Africa and the rest of the Global South, which are supposed to be the source of cheap raw materials for the industrialized world, a market place for Global North technologies and industrial output, and the place where obsolete technologies and assembly line manufacturing is outsourced to. The analysis shows that escaping the bottom of the global economic hierarchy requires strategic investments that are unachievable without a geopolitical leverage and South-South strategic cooperation that would give birth to a new international economic order of peace, justice, and sustainable prosperity.
