Collin’s Law: Anti-Hazing and Hazing Prevention Training
Last year, Ohio passed new anti-hazing legislation , called “Collin’s Law,” to reduce the prevalence of hazing in Ohio’s colleges and universities. The law applies to Denison and creates new legal responsibilities for employees and volunteers.  Denison has also updated its Anti-Hazing and Hazing Prevention policy and is updating faculty and staff employee handbooks with this information. All faculty and staff should review the new policy carefully.

What does the law do?
Since 1983, Ohio has prohibited hazing and defined it as a criminal act.  Collin’s Law expands the definition of hazing, increases the criminal penalties for hazing participants and for those who fail to report or recklessly permit hazing, including employees and volunteers. The law also creates new training and reporting requirements for colleges and universities.

What is hazing?
Hazing is defined as any action taken as part of an initiation (or re-initiation) into “any student or other organization” that causes mental or physical harm to another person (or creates a substantial risk of that harm occurring), including coercing another person to consume alcohol or drugs.

Reporting Requirements
All Denison employees, alumni, and volunteers are required to report their knowledge of hazing to law enforcement immediately.  These reports may be made to Campus Safety at (740) 587-6482, or to other local law enforcement, including the Granville Police Department (740) 587-1234, the Licking County Sheriff’s Office (740) 670-5555, or to 9-1-1 in an emergency situation. Failure to immediately report hazing is a fourth-degree misdemeanor and becomes a first-degree misdemeanor if the hazing causes serious physical harm.

Training Requirements
All faculty, staff, and volunteers who have direct contact with students and who advise or coach a Denison-recognized organization, including athletic teams, are required to have training on hazing awareness and prevention.  For employees that are required to have anti-hazing prevention and awareness training, please use the following instructions to access the Faculty/Staff training course online:
