A Denison room comes full circle

When Michele Walton Hoehn ’89 was a junior at Denison, she lived in Crawford Hall. Decades later, her daughter, Kate ’29, received her first-year room assignment. The location?

Crawford Hall, same room.

“I messaged my friend who lived across the hall at the time, and she pulled out old photos of us,” Michele said. “Oh my gosh. It’s the same room!”

The Denisonians reunited during Family Weekend for a tour. Michele pointed to the space where a couch once sat and noted that the vanity looked the same. Kate’s bed was even on the same side of the room where Michele once slept.

As Michele walked through the space, memories came rushing back — carrying a film camera to parties, editing The Bullsheet, wearing Mickey ears during Commencement when Michael Eisner was the speaker, and sharing Crawford and East halls with her best friends, who remain close to this day.

“We looked at a lot of schools, because I didn’t want to influence her and say, ‘You have to go to Denison,’” Michele said.

Kate’s dad, Michael, added: “She got accepted to many places, but she ended up coming to her mom’s alma mater.”

He wondered if the room assignment was some kind of cosmic sign — pointing to Denison “being the right place for her, the right college for her.”

Kate agreed. “I’ve met people from all over,” she said. “There’s so much to do, and so many options. So far, I’ve had a lot of fun.”
