This international traveling exhibit opens a debate on the role of culture in the context of relationships, understanding, and tolerance in the European Union.

The travelling exhibition Ladislav Sutnar - Europe - Culture, which is part of a major project called The Return of Ladislav Sutnar, was presented in several venues over the years 2015 and 2016 by the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art and partners. The set of large-size posters is a result of international cooperation among four universities from three countries – the Czech Republic, Poland and the Slovak Republic.

Through posters, students of the participating universities pay tribute to Sutnar – typographer, graphic designer, author of posters, theoretician, pedagogue, a man who believed that art and design have the power to transform humanity and make the world better. At the same time, they reflect on the question of cultural values in contemporary Europe.

Although the posters were created in 2015, they are still very topical and even gain a whole new dimension in the context of recent developments in Europe and the world.

“Two issues have been integrated in the Ladislav Sutnar - Europe - Culture project, namely my own project Hommage à Sutnar and Prof. Míšek’s project Europe/Culture. Students from European universities thus compare their abilities in poster design and their views of the world while, at the same time, paying tribute to the legacy of an artist whose work is now being rediscovered by Europe – a typographer, graphic designer, creator of posters, theoretician, educator, a man who believed that art and design have the power to transform humanity and make the world better,” -says Josef Mištera, Dean of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art and one of the leading educators in the project involving four European art schools.

At the same time, the project concerns the values that have been forming the face of Europe for whole centuries. These values are what unites contemporary Europe and also creates space for the wealth of cultures, knowledge and education.  “It is necessary to stop the daily rush and realize that culture is not only the bearer of classic meanings, such as art, architecture, literature, music, drama, or education, but it is also part of our behaviour and a complex of values generated by human society,” adds Prof. Karel Míšek from the Faculty of Art and Design of the J. E. Purkyne University in Ústí nad Labem.

The students created around 150 posters during their workshops.  Various selections from this set have been shown in a number of venues in Europe including the Václav Havel Airport in Prague and also at the International Poster Biennial and Congress in Mexico (September 2016).
