The Department of Theatre presents the musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” The play takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 24 and 25, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26 and at 8 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday, March 1,2,3 and 4.

Based on the book by Hugh Wheeler with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the musical depicts the infamous tale of Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, who returns to nineteenth century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up.

Mrs. Lovett stands behind her pie counter and reads a newspaper, “The Sun.” The headline reads “GOVT. IMPOSES MEAT RATIONING.”

Mrs. Lovett holds onto Sweeney Todd’s shoulders as she attempts to comfort him.
Mrs. Lovett flaps her hands in panic as she reveals the identity of the dead beggar woman. Sweeney Todd holds the body of the beggar woman, knowing now that it was his lost wife, Lucy. A sign above them reads “SOLD OUT.”
