The Ronneberg lecture and the Department of Physics and Astronomy welcomes Bryn Maw College Dean of Graduate Studies, Professor of Physics & the Rachel C. Hale Professor in the Sciences and Mathematics Xuemei May Cheng presenting “Magnetic Skyrmions For Data Storage & Quantum Computing.”

Magnetic skyrmions, particle- like swirling spin textures with nontrivial topology [1-3], have been the subject of extensive research due to their fascinating physics (e.g. the skyrmion Hall effect [4]) and their technological significance in spintronics. Recently, we have discovered a topological spin memory effect in antiferromagnetically (AF) coupled bubble skyrmions [5], offering a promising avenue for information encryption and recovery. In this talk, Cheng will present our investigation of the spin memory effect in AF-coupled skyrmion pairs in [Co/Gd/Pt] multilayered films, utilizing a combination of photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) and micromagnetic simulations. Cheng will also provide an outlook on the potential applications of nanoskyrmions in quantum computing.
