The Beck Series welcomes GLCA Prize winners for nonfiction, Lars Horn and for fiction, Tsering Yangzom Lama.
Horn is a writer and translator working in literary and experimental non-fiction. Their first book, VOICE OF THE FISH, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize, the 2023 Great Lakes College Association New Writers Award, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Horn’s writing has appeared in Granta, the Virginia Quarterly Review, the Kenyon Review, Poets & Writers, The Rumpus, Literary Hub, and elsewhere. Initially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship, they hold Master of Arts from the University of Edinburgh, the École normale supérieure, Paris, and Concordia University, Montreal. They teach at Columbia University and live in New York with their wife, the writer Jaquira Díaz.
Lama’s debut novel, We Measure the Earth with our Bodies, won the GLCA New Writers Award as well as the Banff Mountain Book Award for Fiction & Poetry. It has been nominated for The Giller Prize, The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, The Carol Shields Prize, The Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writers Prize, The Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and The Jim Deva Prize for Writing that Provokes, The VCU Cabell First Novel Prize, and The Toronto Book Awards. Lama holds an Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and International Relations from the University of British Columbia. A lifelong activist, Lama is a Storytelling Advisor at Greenpeace International, where she guides and trains people around the world in storytelling. Born and raised in Nepal, she currently splits her time between Vancouver, Canada and Sweden. We Measure the Earth with our Bodies is being published in eight languages and ten countries.
