Paving the Way
Sponsored by the Office of Multi Cultural Student Affairs (MCSA), Paving the Way (PTW) encourages all entering students to participate in this program, although its primary focus is to assist traditionally under-represented student populations in transitioning to the academic, cultural, and social climate at Denison University.
This program, in its 22nd year, traditionally begins three days before August Orientation and extends throughout the academic year. Sessions address academic success, ethnic and cultural identities, personal development and an exploration of resources to build stronger relationships with Denison University.

Students will be permitted to arrive between 8am and 4pm. We ask that pre-orientation participants (and their helpers) check-in with the PTW student staff at the Office of Security, Safety and Risk Management (P-1 of the Parking Garage). A PTW Ambassador will then be paired with you to retrieve your room key from the appropriate service center. Please note, the service center will be closed during the lunch hour (12pm-1pm).
Prior to the Welcome Reception at 6 pm, please be sure to be completely moved into your residence hall. All family members are welcomed to join us at the Welcome Reception. PTW will begin immediately following the Welcome Reception..
Should you need to arrive later than 4pm, we will need to know well in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements for you to get into your room. Please note that room keys will not be distributed by Security; these can only be secured from the Curtis West Service Center, which closes at 4:00pm.
Yes. Once you start pre-orientation, for all intentions and purposes, you have officially begun your undergraduate college experience.
In the past, some parents have spent time in their student’s room. If, however, your roommate has arrived, parents are encouraged to seek lodging elsewhere. Parents can book rooms at local hotels, bed and breakfasts, or inns. Information on these are located in your First-Year notebook.
You run the risk of not having a room ready for you to move into. You also affect the meal count and other activities that are scheduled for students. Note: Prior proper planning is extremely important, so make sure you register early.
It is imperative that you submit your health forms. If this form is not in the Health and Records office, then you will not be able to begin your undergraduate experience. Other forms that must be submitted are: housing, personal data/advising form, etc. Refer to the New Student Forms and Information Notebook.
All costs associated with meals and co-curricular activities are taken care of. If, however, you wish to purchase something outside this realm, it is at your personal expense.
The average cost of books per semester is $300-$400. If you receive a DU Bookstore Grant, it will be for $300. You will need to make up the difference, so make sure you save enough money over the course of the summer.
Yes, there are several banks in downtown Granville. A listing is located in your New Student Notebook. Be well advised to open an account early so that your money will be secured.
There are several local churches both in Granville and in Newark. Additionally, students commute to Columbus to any number of churches there. Your spiritual development is important so be encouraged to seek out a church home for the time that you are in school.
You are expected to be actively involved. If your intent is to simply show up and view the experience in a casual, nonchalant fashion, then this will be at the displeasure of all of us who have taken extreme care to develop a meaningful experience for you. Additionally, we will have to address this matter with you, which is not the most appropriate way to begin this new and exciting journey.
Yes, but talk with your coach to make sure that you have release time to also be involved in the sessions. If you find that you cannot reasonably do both, you will need to make a conscious decision which experience would prove most valuable. It has been proven that students who take the time out at the beginning of their experience to be involved in pre-orientation have a better handle on how to manage their first semester.
Family and friends should plan to depart after the Welcome Reception on August 23. Paving the Way does not conduct a parent program. Please call the First-Year Office for information pertaining to parent sessions during August Orientation (740-587-6224).
