This summer I am interning at Dottir Press and Women’s Review of Books as a Publishing Intern, working with the well-known feminist writer Jennifer Baumgardner.
Last November, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend the National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA) conference in San Francisco. At the conference my goal was to make connections to help secure a summer internship in publishing. As an English Writing and Women’s and Gender Studies double major, I hope to find a job after graduation that will combine these two areas of interest. Feminist publishing is the perfect market for me! At the conference I attended a few workshops and sessions but spent a lot of time exploring the book room where different publishers were stationed. Here, I approached Jennifer Baumgardner at her booth for Dottir Press. We quickly connected over my bookselling experience at a local store in Philadelphia that I have worked for since high school. I inquired about internship opportunities, exchanged contact information with her and then followed up after the conference. At my internship I am responsible for reviewing manuscripts, creating style sheets, doing outreach to booksellers, and any other tasks that Jennifer requests me to handle. I will be able to say more about what my duties are after my internship is complete.
