Biography

Dr. Henshaw is a clinical psychologist trained in interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral approaches to treating adult psychopathology. She completed her Ph.D. at Eastern Michigan University and her APA-accredited predoctoral internship at University of Michigan Counseling and Psychological Services.

At Denison Dr. Henshaw teaches courses in abnormal psychology, clinical psychology, introductory psychology, research methods and health psychology. She has also developed seminar courses on stress and coping as well as stigma and mental health.

Her recent scholarship has developed around psychosocial contributors to health during periods of major life transition, especially the birth of a first child and the transition to college. Her research in childbirth focuses on postpartum depression, breastfeeding, and treatment seeking decisions. Her research in college student transitions explores the relationship between beliefs about anxiety and stress and students’ response to stressors.

Research

Details

Dr. Henshaw's primary line of research explores cognitive-behavioral factors at the intersection of postpartum depressive symptoms, breastfeeding, and partner support in couples adjusting to first time parenthood. Example research questions include: How do couples perceive the role of the co-parent partner in supporting breastfeeding and maternal depression treatment decisions? What are the relationships among breastfeeding self-efficacy, partner support, and depressive symptoms? What needs do mothers and partners identify to enhance coping and optimal health during the early postpartum period?

A second line of research explores how students think about and respond to stressors, especially in the transition to college. Projects in this area have included exploration of the relationship between students’ “lay-theories” of how counseling would help them and their confidence in treatment outcomes, as well as students' mindsets about anxiety as a predictor of mental health outcomes in the transition to college.
