A lounge seat is dimly lit on stage. Behind the seat there are two blue projections of school children and a solitary building in the forest.
Praskovya holds the arm of her brother, who looks confused and worried at her. Ivan stands slackjawed, while the servant Gerasim watches him.
Ivan sits on the lounge seat and looks in fear at the specters of an extremely tall man with a cane and a man in a tuxedo either side of him.
Ivan looks offstage while he rests on the lounge seat. Gerasim supports Ivan’s leg on his shoulder to ease his pain.
Ivan holds his wife in near darkness as he remembers their early years. Next to them, young Ivan offers his hand to young Praskovya to dance.
Ivan fearfully speaks to Praskovya as she kneels next to him. They are both looking off to the right.
Praskoyva adjusts the hem of her daughter Lisa’s white evening dress. Lisa looks off into the distance.
Ivan, in his night shirt, leaps up from the lounge seat screaming. Gerasim stands concerned behind him.
A dying Ivan holds the hand of his son as he lays on the lounge seat. Gerasim places his hands on their heads and looks mournfully in the distance.
