Denison’s Studio Art program welcomes Miguel González.

The practice of video art in Colombia started at the end of the 1970’s, becoming more popular in the 80’s. By 1990’s there was a big production.

To articulate it’s language video art in Colombia has used metaphors and has been nourished by ideas from politics, sexuality, aesthetics, to name a few. It has been influenced by multicultural and multiethnic points of view. Video art in Colombia has talked about conflict, displacement and terrorism. It has followed various aesthetics and has been influenced by performance art and art installations. Video art in Colombia has not only been shown in alternative art spaces, but also in museums and more traditional oriented art spaces.

The selection of video art shown here, presents work created in the 21st century by young artists. With the exception of Juan Fernando Herrán with his piece of 1993 where he uses the concept of the self-portrait in which he eats nature and María Fernanda Cardoso with her work of the year 2000, about an almost unthinkable situation of a circus with fleas, the rest of the work shown in this exhibit is by emerging artists. This makes the works shown in this exhibit not only the result of a specific environment, but also the carriers of different interests and aesthetics. They all have in common a critical perspective that unifies much of the contemporary thinking.

Diversity and eclecticism is what this exhibit offers, because these artists work independently without any affiliation to specific groups. They each just follow their own interests. Video art in Colombia is becoming more and more popular due to its accessibility and immediacy.
