Annika Bruce ’23, who majored in educational studies and English (writing) at Denison, moved close to home in West Virginia after graduating to work as a college advisor and get a master’s degree — both at Marshall University. It’s easy for her to stay in contact with her professors, and it’s a short commute from work to class.

“I work with the Heart of Appalachia Talent Search (HATS) program, where I serve first-generation and low-income middle and high school students in Mason and Wayne counties,” Bruce said. She visits about six schools a month to teach career exploration and college preparation.

“I’m able to stay connected with my community from home and give back,” she said. “I’ve always had a passion for Appalachia and helping students. My job is a fantastic fit for me.”

Bruce advises Denison students “to dream bigger and have more confidence in their abilities,” and to take courses that they are interested in, even if those courses seem difficult.
