Set in the not-so-distant past of the 1990s, in the not-so-distant town of Athens, Ohio, “She Kills Monsters” takes audiences on an adventure through treacherous lands into the deepest corners of our imagination. Qui Nguyen’s 2011 comedy-drama introduces us to Agnes Evans, who, after bemoaning her average and boring life, experiences a devastating loss that turns her world upside down. In search of new ways to connect with her sister, Tilly, Agnes embarks on a journey into the world of role playing games and geekdom, discovering the world that provided a refuge for Tilly. Supermodel elves, Dungeon Masters, ogres, and villains await Agnes and the audience in this heartwarming tale of bravery, self acceptance, and love beyond life and death. 

Aviva Neff joins Denison’s Theatre Department to direct this production. “She Kills Monsters” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com.

The Narrator, wearing a dark cloak, raises her hands and addresses the audience with a foreboding expression.
The elf rogue Kalliope stands, holding a staff with black leaves. She has bright white hair in a ponytail and a cobweb top.
Agnes, holding a shield, slumps her shoulders and frowns as her sister Tilly in full armor watches her, Kalliope kneeling towards both of them.
Tilly draws her sword as two bugbears, with fur covered masks, approach her.
The demon Lilith, with black horns and wings, looks up at the Demon Overlord Orcus, who has a mesh red mask with horns.
The pink-haired fairy Farrah looks down at the defeated Orcus, who lays on the ground before her. Tilly, Agnes, and Lilith stand back in varied states of shock and fear.
Dungeon Master Chuck grabs onto frightened Miles as Agnes stands to the side, now wearing a belt and sword sheath.
Two cheerleader succubi grab onto Miles’ chest to rip his heart out. The rest of the party watches, weapons drawn.
The Beholder appears, wearing a mask with teeth and a central eye with a crown of smaller eye stalks. They hold two baubles matching their mask.
Tilly, wearing a Thundercats t-shirt and armor, holds onto her sword handle and yells triumphantly. Agnes watches in the background, holding a sword and shield.
