What are your major(s) and what drew you to them?
I am a history major and a vocal music performance minor. I’ve been very fortunate to have many phenomenal history teachers throughout my life, each bringing insight from their particular field of study and presenting it to the class in an individualized way. I’ve made very close connections with teachers and professors throughout my life, and this has guided me to not only major in history but pursue a career in education.
Music has also always been a large aspect of my life, as I’ve played piano for 12 years and a few other instruments. Singing is how I’ve chosen to continue my love for music in college as it is a crucial aspect of my identity which I feel brings human beings together unlike anything else.
What were your high school interests and what are you involved in here at Denison?
In high school I was involved in choir 7th-12th grade. It was a fairly intense choral program, we would go to OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) competitions where we would sight read and prepare repertoire to compete against the other best choirs in the state. I also was involved in theater from my junior year onward, performing in shows such as Urinetown, A Doll’s House, Songs For A New World, etc.
At Denison I am involved in a couple music ensembles. I’m a member of the Denison Chamber Singers under the direction of Harris Ipock. I am also involved in Singers’ Theater Workshop with professor Kevin Wines, and I sing bass for the Denison Hilltoppers, the oldest acapella group on campus.Outside of the arts I enjoy rock climbing, reading, playing video games, and playing basketball and golf.
Tell us about a favorite class or professor?
So far my favorite class would have to be Dr. Yusef’s Ottoman Piracy and Captivity. This course follows internal and external views of the Ottoman empire and the extent of its influence in the Mediterranean world throughout its existence, from the Islamic golden age to its gradual decline culminating in its fall at the end of World War I.
Dr. Yusef has an incredible pedagogical approach to facilitating class discussion and interaction with not only the readings and lectures but also with creating physical representation of history through the new digital humanities department.
What is one of your favorite memories relating to the arts at Denison?
I love cracking jokes with my friends from across the room in both Chamber Singers and Singers Theater. These ensembles facilitate a communal environment that is inviting, inspiring, and inclusive. I love making Kevin Wines laugh, whether it’s with me or at me.
