Zachery Meier, a visiting assistant music professor at Denison, recently completed a week-long residency at Washington State University. Meier held two premieres of his compositions, performing Meraki and Carbon White with a WSU ensemble.

The residency was an opportunity to collaborate with ensembles and faculty at WSU, including the percussion department and WSU’s Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation Resource Center. Meier also teaches courses in the Queer Studies department at Denison. “What’s nice about it is that I’ve moved past the student stage of everything and am now entering the beginning of my professional career,” Meier said. “This solidifies that movement into the early part of my professional career.”

Meier earned an M.A. at WSU and returned as part of an alumni welcome event for homecoming weekend. “I’m bringing back all of the knowledge from the places I’ve studied and taught and giving back to those who have helped me along the way,” he said. With a Denison research grant, Meier will be premiering a new composition in Chicago in 2022.
