      Denison President Adam Weinberg with the 2019 President’s Medalists

      Denison University celebrated the academic achievements of students and faculty during the college’s annual academic awards convocation, held this year on Friday, April 12. Full of professors in regalia and applauding students, Swasey Chapel echoed with cheers as members of faculty and students ascended the stage to receive their awards.

      A number of Denison professors hold named chairs, which come with monetary and other awards. The professors newly holding named chairs are:

      • Associate Professor of Computer Science Thomas C. Bressoud: Benjamin Barney Chair of Mathematics
      • Assistant Professor of Philosophy John McHugh: Bayley-Bowen Faculty Fellowship
      • Professor of Philosophy Barbara Fultner: William G. Bowen Distinguished Professor
      • Professor of Physics Steven Doty: Nancy Eshelman Brickman Professor in Memory of Dr. Ellenor Shannon
      • Associate Professor of Economics Quentin Duroy: John E. Harris Chair of Economics
      • Professor of Biology Jeffrey Thompson: Tight Family Chair in Natural Sciences
      • Associate Professor of Biology Rebecca Homan: John and Christine Warner Professor
      • Associate Professor of Philosophy Sam Cowling: John and Christine Warner Professor

      Two special awards recognized particular excellence in teaching at Denison.

      • Professor of Education Karen Graves: The Charles A. Brickman Teaching Excellence Award
      • Associate Professor of Political Science and director of the Off-campus Study Program Katy Crossley-Frolick: The Bonar Family Mentorship and Teaching Award.

      In addition to recognizing student members of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honorary, three graduating seniors were recognized for their “extraordinary level of intellectual engagement and academic achievement” with the Provost’s Academic Excellence Award. Those students:

      • Mathematics major Benjamin Lewis Brown ‘19
      • Biology major Kaitlyn Elise Fouke ‘19
      • Computer science and history double major Caileigh Heather Marshall ‘19

      Students from a range of classes were honored for international fellowships and awards. These students partnered with the Lisska Center for Scholarly Research to achieve these awards. They include:

      • Rachel Abbott ’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Austria and Germany
      • Emmaline Harms’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Argentina
      • Madina Khudaynazar ’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Turkey
      • Julia Laden ’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Spain
      • Andrea Vallejo ’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Mexico
      • Kaitlin Weiss-Silvestri ’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Indonesia
      • Andrea Weyneth ’19: Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Ukraine
      • James Fennessey ’19: Boren Critical Language Scholarship in Arabic
      • Nolan Kelemen ’21: Critical Language Scholarship in Portuguese
      • Laura Robinson ’19: MENAR Fellowship
      • Fatoumata Kaba ‘19: The Davis Project for Peace
      • Jaley Bruursema ’20: Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
      • Autumn Goodrum-Davis ’20: Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
      • Kimberly Gutierrez ’20: Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
      • Elizabeth Jaffy ’19: Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
      • Fiona McNichols ’20: Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
      • Hayley LeBlanc ’20: DAAD RISE (Research Internship in Science and Engineering)
      • Rowan Sharkey ’21: DAAD RISE (Research Internship in Science and Engineering)
      • Lucas Unver ‘22 Fulbright UK Summer Institute

      Finally, the event featured the President’s Medalists, students with academic achievement and who embody some combination of service to the community, contribution to the arts, enlargement of the community’s global perspective, athletic fitness and achievement, leadership ability and contribution to community discourse were honored. This year’s honorees:
