Denison University will extend a Big Red welcome to more than 600 first-year students of the Class of 2020 as residence halls open on Sunday, Aug. 28. Students will move into their residence halls with assistance from members of the Denison football team and other staff and members of the student body. “We are very much looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2020,” said Greg Sneed, vice president for enrollment management. “This extraordinary group of students is academically talented, diverse, and comprised of fascinating individuals who will add to the vibrancy of the Denison community. As they learn from Denison, so, too, will we learn from them.”
The Class of 2020 comprises students from 41 states and 20 countries, 55 percent of them women, 45 percent men. The class continues the college’s commitment to diversity with 32 percent of the entering class hailing from multicultural backgrounds. This puts Denison in the company of the most diverse liberal arts and science colleges in the country. The average SAT score for the first-year students is 1279 and the average ACT score is 30.
Denison faculty and staff in full academic regalia will greet the Class of 2020 and their parents at an Induction Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. The ceremony will include a formal welcome by Denison President Adam Weinberg, members of senior administration, and the president of the student body.
These students will be the first to take full advantage of a number of new strategic initiatives that were introduced last year, including groundbreaking academic programs in global commerce, data analytics, financial economics and narrative nonfiction. The college also launched the Austin E. Knowlton Center for Career Exploration with a focus on leveraging the college’s significant alumni network, paid internships and the establishment of several innovative career-preparation programs. Denison has expanded global learning programs and partnerships with colleges and universities around the world, and has forged mutually beneficial relationships in nearby Columbus, which is trending for college students and graduates, and recently was named by Forbes as the top “opportunity city” in the nation. Denison University’s place at the forefront of higher education is recognized by “Colleges That Change Lives,” U.S. News, and Forbes, among others.
