New Scholarship Announced

October 7, 2014

Denison University has announced that a new annual $30,000 merit-based scholarship is available for Ohio students. The John W. Alford Ohio Service Scholarship is designed to recognize Ohio students who have demonstrated academic success as well as significant accomplishments in community service.

“We are delighted to announce this scholarship, which reflects the importance of civic engagement in a Denison education,” says Perry Robinson, Denison vice president and director for admissions. “Our liberal arts education is committed to a ‘whole-person’ approach, which provides our students with the knowledge, skills and tools to effect real change in their workplace and in their community.”

The scholarship is valued at $30,000 a year and is renewable for $120,000 over 4 years. Twenty scholarships will be awarded annually without regard to families’ financial circumstances. In addition, scholarship recipients will be eligible for the following:

  • Preferential housing in the Morrow Service Learning House
  • Placement with a community service organization in Licking County, e.g. Big Brother Big Sisters, Mental Health Association, etc.
  • Preferential enrollment in the Denison Service Orientation Program Orientation Program in Washington D.C. for incoming first-year students.

All students who attend a public, private, or charter school or who are homeschooled in the state of Ohio are eligible for consideration based upon their completed application to Denison, received no later than January 15, 2015. While there is no separate application required for the scholarship, applicants should highlight their community service involvement in their Common Application.
