Anthony J. Lisska presents at St.Thomas Aquinas Convocation

Ohio Dominican University’s Center for Dominican Studies will host its annual St.Thomas Aquinas Convocation. Anthony J. Lisska, Ph.D., a professor of Philosophy and holder of the Maria Theresa Barney Professorship at Denison University, will deliver the keynote address, “Mindfulness and St. Thomas: Reason and the Good Life.” Following the lecture, ODU will offer a Eucharistic Celebration at 12:15 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel, located in Sansbury Hall.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Lisska to Ohio Dominican as a voice for truth, a core theme that our students are exploring this academic year,” said vice president for Mission and Identity, Sr. Diane Traffas, OP. “Dr. Lisska’s vast knowledge and expertise in St.Thomas Aquinas and philosophy in general will provide our campus community with important perspective and background as we continue to discuss, explain and contemplate the truth during the remainder of this academic year, and throughout our lives.”

Lisska joined the Denison faculty in 1969. He has served in numerous roles, including as the dean of the college, chair of the Department of Philosophy, and the founding director of the Honors Program. Lisska is widely published on the topic of philosophy, having written several books and nearly 60 philosophical articles, essays, and book reviews.

He received the Carnegie Foundation United States Baccalaureate Colleges Professor of the Year Award, and the Sears National Teaching Award at Denison. He has served as an evaluator for curriculum projects on four occasions for The National Endowment for the Humanities, and has served as an external consultant for Honors Program development and philosophy department evaluation. He is a founding member of the National Association of Fellowship Advisors.

In the community, Lisska served as president of The Granville Foundation in 2004 and 2008, and is a member of the Granville Historical Society.

Lisska holds a Bachelor of Arts from Providence College, a master’s from Saint Stephen’s College, a doctorate from The Ohio State University, and a certificate from the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.
