Denison Art Space in Newark holds an opening reception for “A Portrait Retrospective,” by painter Susan Moore, professor and chair of Painting at Tyler School of Art of Temple University.

This exhibition is the first major retrospective of Moore’s portraits, including artworks from 1980 to the present. Primarily images of women, the works presented demonstrate a variety of approaches to paintings and drawings, as well as photographic collages. The more than 30 pieces in the show reveal Moore’s tenacious use of diverse mediums and stylistic choices. Whether depicting herself, friends, family or still frame images from fashion or film, Moore imbues her subjects of her paintings with poignancy, mystery and empowerment. In the context of our fast digital instagram/social media culture, Moore’s paintings challenge viewers to contemplate issues of representation, self and identity at a deeper humanist level.

Moore earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Indiana University and her Master of Fine Arts at the University of California Davis. She exhibits nationally and internationally. Her work has been collected by numerous institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC and the LA Salle University Art Museum.

Moore’s exhibition will be on display at the Denison Art Space in Newark from February 1 – March 8.
