Dr. Charles Bennett to speak on Landauer's Principle, Reversible Computation, and Maxwell's Demon

Landauer's Principle, Reversible Computation, and Maxwell's Demon is the title of the Fast Talk that Dr. Charles Bennett, IBM Fellow will deliver on Friday, October 25th at 3:30 p.m. in Olin 114.

The second law of thermodynamics is famous having manifestations that seem to have nothing to do with heat or work. One of the newest of these avatars of the second law, suitable for our information age, is Landauer's principle, “No physical process has as its sole result the erasure of information.” We discuss the interplay of physics and information, beginning nearly 150 years ago with the paradox of Maxwell's demon, modern experiments making the demon visible for the first time, the theory of reversible computation by ideal Brownian computers modeled on the genetic apparatus, and the thermodynamics of error-correction in Brownian automata that, like real enzymes, are less than ideal.
