Singing the praises of Christian popular music

Anna Nekola, assistant professor of communication, researches Christian popular music.

Anna Nekola, assistant professor of communication, gave a presentation on competing definitions of gospel and commercial Christian popular music as part of a seminar discussion titled “What is Gospel Music?” at the annual meeting of the Society for American Music. In her talk, “Christian Popular Music: The Challenge of Defining Vernacular Musics within the Marketplace and Academia,” Nekola argued that although using “Christian” and “gospel” as adjectives for music with a Christian message creates a genre which includes musics lacking a “single sonic code,” academics should be wary when looking to develop new categories and taxonomies in which to frame such music. Instead, Nekola recommended, academics should seek to follow vernacular practices when developing terms and categories.
