Denison’s English department breaks down the boundaries separating the classroom, campus, and the community at large. Co-curricular activities range from the formal to the unstructured, from spontaneous happenings to scheduled events, from the innovative to the traditional.

Internships

Denison’s Publisher-in-Residence is Michael Nye, the Columbus-based editor-in-chief of Story magazine, the nation’s oldest literary journal. Editorial interns (unpaid) and an assistant editor (paid) read short stories submitted to the magazine, proof and edit pages of upcoming magazine issues, manage social media, interview Story authors, and more. Interns meet on campus with Nye three times per semester.

Opportunities also abound for summer internships in publishing, public relations, and other writing-oriented industries. Denison-exclusive summer internships are offered at Story magazine, the Virginia Quarterly Review, WOSU, Versatile Words, and many other literary and media organizations.

Denison Seminars

Several Denison Seminars, team-taught by an English professor and professors from other departments, have given sophomores and juniors the chance to extend their learning beyond Granville. For example, the “Shakespeare by the Sword” class—taught by a theatre professor and a creative writing professor who also coaches the fencing team—traveled to Stratford, Ontario, to see performances at the Stratford Shakespeare festival. The “Looking for Richard III” class took students to medieval sites in London and Leicester, England.

Off-Campus Study

Every year a significant number of English majors participate in off-campus study programs, which offer special opportunities for research and scholarly enrichment. One of the most popular programs, Advanced Studies in England, is based in Bath, England. Programs in New York City as well as in Scotland, Ireland, England, France, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Japan, and elsewhere around the globe offer rich opportunities for English majors, too.

Student Publications

Articulāte

Drawing on the work of Denison students across the curriculum, Articulāte is the English Department’s journal of literary and cultural criticism. Published annually, the journal contains the best original student research essays. A student editorial board reviews submissions and prepares the issue for printing.

Exile

Founded in 1953, Denison’s student literary magazine Exile showcases our students’ best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, stage plays, book reviews, and art, as selected by a student editorial board and faculty adviser.
