Welcoming the incoming class of students

Induction Ceremony

Each year, Denison welcomes the newest members of its student community at the Induction Ceremony.

As part of this ceremony, often held outdoors on the Reese~Shackelford Common, members of the faculty and staff greet and applaud the new class, which processes along Chapel Walk before arriving at the Common. The president formally welcomes the new class with a charge to excellence and service over the next four years.

In addition to the president, speakers typically include the student president of the Denison Campus Governance Association, the chair of the faculty, and the vice-president of Institutional Advancement.

After a musical fanfare that has been commissioned specifically for the class is debuted, the College Bell, forged in 1855, marks the beginning of the event. Four years later, during the class' Commencement exercises, the process is repeated, as the fanfare is performed for the second and final time, and the bell once again opens the ceremony .

Parents and other family members are encouraged to attend this very special ceremony for their incoming students.
