Student Spotlight: Amanda Jack '17 on Biophysics

Student News

Jess Ensley ’17: What do you do at the library?

Amanda Jack ’17: I work at the circulation desk. My favorite shift is 9 P.M. to midnight. I get paging slips, do outgoing cargo, and help patrons at the front desk.

Jess: What is your favorite thing about working at the library?

Amanda: I really enjoy doing cargo. I find getting books where they need to go very satisfying.

Jess: Who is your favorite professor and why?

Amanda: My favorite professor is Dr. Riina Tehver in the physics department. She's been my research advisor since my freshman year. I did research with her for two summers and I've had her for four classes. She's made me a better student and a better scientist, she introduced me to biophysics (my current field of study), and she's given me a ton of professional advice. She's kind, encouraging, funny, and crazy smart. We've also had a bunch of movie nights with her—she sat through the first six Star Wars movies, but I don't think she liked them very much. She's off campus on sabbatical this year, and I don't know what to do with myself.

Jess: What is your career goal?

Amanda: My career goal is to go to graduate school after graduating from Denison, earn my Ph.D. in biophysics, and do research in a biophysics-related field.

Jess: What are you involved in on campus?

Amanda: I'm involved in the Denison Gaming Guild, I'm Co-President of the Society of Physics Students, and I have a Community Match through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Jess: What other hobbies do you have?

Amanda: My other hobbies include watching science fiction shows and movies (my current favorites include Battlestar Galactica, Rick and Morty, and Stranger Things), playing in an RPG, and getting Jolly Pirate Donuts at 2 A.M.

Jess: What advice do you have for first years?

Amanda: My advice for first-years is to make friends with several different groups of people in classes, extracurricular activities, your dorm, etc. Don’t limit yourself to one group. Also, always introduce yourself to your professors during their office hours, preferably during the first week of classes.

Jess: What is one thing you have never done at Denison that you want to do before graduating?

Amanda: I would really like to go to the top of Swasey, but I don't think that will actually happen…
