The Department of Music welcomes Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts William Osborne on the harpsichord, piano and organ and Professor Andrew Carlson on the violin. William Osborne served on the Denison faculty from 1961 until retiring in 2003 as Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts, Director of Choral Organizations and University Organist. With three degrees from the University of Michigan, during those 42 years he taught a variety of classroom courses, both topical courses for the Department of Music and interdisciplinary courses in the Honors Program. Founding conductor of The Denison Singers, he also led The Concert Choir in major works for chorus and orchestra, and early on also had charge of a Chapel Choir and Women’s Chorale. As organist he has played several hundred recitals across this country, as well as in Europe and Australia, and issued three long-out-ofprint LPs of music mostly by period American composers. He was the principal editor of an edition of the complete organ works of Charles Ives, the author of many articles as well as a biography of organ virtuoso Clarence Eddy issued by the Organ Historical Society and a survey of Music in Ohio, published by the Kent State University Press. He now lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he moved from Granville to assume the position of music director of the Piedmont Chamber Singers, a position he held for six years.
