Essentials of Finance

Open to: Current sophomores, juniors, and seniors

Designed as an introduction to key topics in finance, this program will teach you basic vocabulary and concepts to build your financial acumen as well your confidence for interviewing, interning and working in the business world. You’ll learn to create and analyze balance sheets and income statements, communicate financial accounting information, apply time value of money concepts to a variety of common accounting situations and more.

Upon successful completion of this seminar you will be able to:

  • Create and analyze balance sheets, income statements, statements of retained earnings, and cash flow statements
  • Communicate financial accounting information to a variety of audiences for decision making
  • Describe and illustrate the uses of managerial accounting information
  • Analyze the role of finance in business
  • Apply time value of money concepts to a variety of common accounting situations

Presenter: Louann Cummings, Denison alumna, and Professor of Business at University of Findlay. Cummings has taught in the Denison Organizational Studies program since its inception and has taught students virtually for 20 years.

Profile: Cummings is a tenured Professor of Business at the University of Findlay. She received her Bachelor of Arts in economics from Denison University, a Master of Business Administration (and Certified Public Accountant) from the University of Toledo, and a Doctor of Business Management from Case Western Reserve University. Her passion is helping students and colleagues, regardless of their course of study, become exceptional global leaders who truly make a difference. She also worked for Root Learning, Inc. developing learning map technologies for companies such as Harley-Davidson, ATT Wireless, Motorola, UPS, and Whirlpool.

Cummings teaches various undergraduate and graduate accounting, business strategy and implementation, and leadership courses and has many years of experience in deploying effective and engaging online learning experiences. Cummings has also worked in India with an ultra-poor NGO project, served as a Fulbright Scholar in Hanoi, Vietnam, and as a Fulbright Specialist in Niamey, Niger in 2019.

Attendance will be limited to 50 participants but we will maintain a wait list if more than 50 students express interest.
