The Denison University Department of Theatre presents an adaptation of “As [We] Like It: Variations on Love and Desire in Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden” by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s tale of sexual identity, gender play, and escape from normalcy is radically updated for the 2020s.
What happens when norms of social behavior give way to the vast and various possibilities of desire and imagination? Are life and theatre alike when it comes to identity? Are we merely a reaction to our shared history, whether we choose to follow or resist it, or can we evade the shackles of our past, leaving behind the whole concept of “normal,” by truly inventing ourselves? In the forest of Arden, Rosalind playfully interrogates the trueness of heart of her beloved Orlando through the form-shifting antics of her very own masculine shadow, Ganymede. Meanwhile, contemporary players multiply inhabiting these classical roles, trouble their text, bust binaries, and question power in this 400 year old adult comedy.
