Denison University welcomes Dan-el Padilla Peralta, Assistant Professor of Classics at Princeton University presenting “Athens and Sparta of the New World: The Classical Passions of Santo Domingo.”
Padilla Peralta examines the reception and appropriation of classical Greece and Rome in the Dominican Republic, along its trajectory from colony to nation. He argues that this appropriation is bound to a racialized cultural-nationalistic program that continues to exert a powerful subterranean influence on Dominican debates about statehood and race.
