"Monumental!", an exhibition by German artists Anne and Christian Manss.

Notice: this information is for a past event.

Join us for the reception of “Monumental!” an exhibition by German artists Anne and Christian Manss. This talented couple collaborated with Denison, Newark and Licking County residents in order to create this installation inspired by our local legends. This work explores how art can pay homage to communal pride through size, scale and dimension.

Licking County, Ohio’s residents and historians have longed referred to the area as the Land of Legend, citing both the ancient Hopewell people who built an extensive mound system 2,000 years ago, and the larger-than-life people and monuments that have made history since the county’s European settlers arrived. Inspired by these oversized legends including the Longaberger Company’s epic basket building, the artists have created, “Monumental!” as an interactive project about how size, scale and dimension in art pays homage to communal pride in history, culture and place. The Manss’ “Monumental!” will feature a “Bottle Cap Collage” made by Newark students from Cherry Valley and McGuffy Elementary Schools.

There will also be multiple dance performances by Denison Professor, Sandra Mathern-Smith’s Site Specific Dance students, at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The artists will speak about their work at 5:30 p.m., followed by Emily Cline – Visual Arts Instructor for Cherry Valley and McGuffey Elementary Schools, and Professor Sandra Mathern-Smith.

Transportation will be provided from p1 of Denison’s parking garage from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
