The Denison Fringe Festival presents “Love, Time, Pain, Forgetting,” a theatrical dance piece by Cierra L. King ’20, is inspired by the work of author Toni Morrison.

Based on the avant garde theater that King performed in her Theater 195 class, this performance is molded with her story that is inspired by Morrison’s four books “Love,” “God Help the Child,” “The Dancing Mind,” and “Beloved.”

Last summer, King analyzed these novels and found reoccurring themes that all of the characters in the books experienced: pain, time & forgetting, love, sacrifice, and freedom. Now, these are elements that King started to think about and apply to her own life. She challenges the audience think about the ways in which love, time & forgetting, sacrifice and freedom have shaped you. King will perform her work in collaboration with the I.D.M. dance group.

When a small group of theatre artists programmed some alternative work on the periphery of the inaugural Edinburgh Festival in Scotland in 1947, they ignited the “fringe festival” movement, fostering exciting, non-traditional, and limits-expanding theatre around the world. The Denison Fringe will include a series of diverse original performances by students and faculty, guests, and student organizations and celebrate the theatre-making of Denisonians. It also will include, on Saturday, April 28, a staged reading of George S. Kaufman & Marc Connelly’s “Beggar on Horseback,” the first play produced on the Ace Morgan stage, in 1956, as we say good-bye to our home of more than sixty years.
