The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Ping Yang presenting “Chinese Philosophy and Human Communication.” The three major philosophical forces of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism have made great impacts on Chinese culture and communication patterns. This talk deals with communication from the perspective of Chinese philosophy, including the application of the thoughts of the three major philosophical forces and other schools to the levels of interpersonal, intercultural, and political communication. It approaches the topics through a harmony theory of Chinese communication, which makes significant contributions to the contemporary conceptualizations of Hexie, a widely adopted concept and communication practice in China’s current social settings. Ping Yang is assistant professor in the Department of Communication. Her teaching and scholarship focus on the intersections of culture, communication, and technology. Her primary research interests include identity construction, cultural adaptation, and intercultural online communication. Yang received her Ph.D. in intercultural communication from Arizona State University. Her M.A. degrees are in communication from Bowling Green State University and linguistics from Xi’an International Studies University.
