As Denison’s program coordinator in Multicultural Student Affairs, Karess Gilcrease advises multicultural student organizations, coordinate programming, aids in the development of leadership, social, cultural, and educational forums, and collaborates with university departments and offices — all to sustain an environment of inclusivity across the Denison community.
Focused on helping students to grow and prepare for lives after college, Gilcrease looks for programming that gives students the space to question their ideas and beliefs. One of her major goals is to launch Denison University Cultural Trips that open dialogues about inclusivity and embracing diversity.
“I am excited to grow and to be a part of a University that truly focuses on mentorship and community, which are two visions that I deeply value,” Gilcrease says.
“Karess embodies positivity and passion. As a staunch advocate for social justice, she brings theoretical understanding and practical experience to diversity programming,” says Thomas Witherspoon, associate dean of students and director of Multicultural Student Affairs.
In her free time, Gilcrease enjoys reading, listening to hip-hop and R&B, but mostly spending time with her fiancé, family, and friends.
Gilcrease wants students to know that she’s in their corner and wants to support their success. “I know how hard it can be to inherit an unfamiliar space while trying to become the person you wish to be,” she says, “I hope the students will find that I am dedicated to their triumph and know that this work embodies my purpose.”
