2013: The Courage To Create A Just World

Ceremonies

Denison University's 2013 Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was The Courage To Create A Just World.

In his "Letter from Birmingham Jail" (April 16, 1963), the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." As we at Denison University celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s letter and his 83rd birthday, we reflect on how these words continue to resonate with our current struggles for social, economic, and political justice. Considering the passion and persistence of Dr. King’s prophetic work, we ask:

  • Do we have the courage to challenge our own privilege and participation in unjust systems?
  • Do we have the courage to confront our own complicity in ongoing injustices?
  • Do we have the courage to contest the institutional barriers that threaten opportunities for the next generation?
  • Do we have the courage to struggle with others to create a just world?

In 2013, Denison joined efforts with Granville's Feed the Dream campaign. Swasey Chapel served as a collection site on Sunday and Monday. Folks were invited to bring any money or food donations to either the Interfaith Service or the Convocation. View more information on the Feed the Dream campaign.
