Alford Community Leadership & Involvement Center
Denison's Alford Community Leadership & Involvement Center has adopted the following definition of leadership, crafted by the Higher Education Research Institute, as its foundation for programming:
A leader is not necessarily someone who holds some formal position of leadership or who is perceived as a leader by others. Rather, a leader is one who is able to affect positive change for the betterment of others, the community, and society. All people, in other words, are potential leaders. Moreover, the process of leadership cannot be described simply in terms of the behavior of an individual; rather leadership involves collaborative relationships that lead to collective action grounded in the shared values of people who work together to affect positive change.
Make your way to the Alford Community Leadership & Involvement Center (CLIC) and you’ll come across a place bustling with student activity! As the Director of CLIC, I have the privilege of leading a dynamic team of professional and student staff that is passionate about Denison's mission to create discerning moral agents and active citizens. We do this by working with student leaders at Denison to plan important events (from Denison traditions to weekend entertainment), advising the fraternity/sorority community as it strives to uphold its espoused values, assisting our diverse student organizations in their pursuits, and offering award-winning leadership development programs. We love working with students to identify where they want to make their mark at Denison – see what CLICs for them!
CLIC’s work is centered on the student involvement model. Understanding that the greater a student’s involvement in college, the greater the amount of learning and personal development, our efforts with students help them to develop practical competencies, exercise critical thinking, and grow interpersonally and intrapersonally. We strive to create opportunities for students to develop as ethical leaders, express themselves creatively, develop community and ultimately enhance the collegiate experience—all while having a little fun, too!
