Interviewing artists in Berlin
Emma Stancey '18, a communication major from Naperville, Ill. is studying off-campus in Berlin this semester. During her first block of classes, she took a radio production class that partnered with NPR Berlin. Stancey narrated and helped produce (along with 3 Elon students) a story about German artist Günther Schaefer, who grew up in former West Germany near the eastern border.
Stancey interviewed Schaefer about a mural currently located on the East Side Gallery. An international memorial for freedom, the East Side Gallery is a 1316 m long section of the Berlin Wall located near the centre of Berlin. Schaefer allows graffiti to become part of his artwork and renews it each year.
He commented: “The text is a declaration of my thoughts, normally the picture that contains speaks for itself but many fanatics dislike content. And it is very precious for me that our generation - Israeli and German - can work with the delicate motif about the content together.”
