Hannah Cain '16 Interns with CIEE
This summer I had the incredible opportunity to work as an intern with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) at their headquarters in Portland, Maine. Alongside ten other interns, I completed an individual project, participated in weekly professional development seminars, presented my work to CIEE’s CEO and Executive Board, and ate an unhealthy amount of lobster.
My project consisted of planning fall reentry events for the 500+ high school students who went abroad through CIEE this summer. I started out by researching reverse culture shock, then I developed a survey to send out to CIEE’s past five years of High School Study Abroad Alumni and their parents to gain a better understanding of the that age group in particular. Next came the fun part of planning the actual events. I targeted four different cities, which together contain about 300 of the 500 students. After reaching out to various CIEE employees across the US, I was able to nail down the dates and venues, create an online invitation, and develop the event structure and curriculum.
The weekly professional development seminars were especially valuable to my own development this summer. I learned a lot about networking, writing a strong cover letter, and the inner workings of a Human Resources department. This internship definitely led me to create new career goals and gave me the tools I need to achieve them.
