Three years ago, Blake Turner, a visiting professor of art at Denison, launched an art gallery in one of the most accessible locations he could think of: his backyard shed.
Unpretentiously called “The Shed,” Turner invites local artists to create art for one-night exhibitions that turn his backyard into a neighborhood hang out.
“When we first moved here, about four years ago, we wanted to make a project that somehow built community,” said Turner. “This project developed a family for us, a family of friends.”
Keith Spencer, an assistant professor of art at Denison, was invited to be one of the exhibitors. He turned the outside doors into a work of art.
“The doors act as a sort of modernist grid,” said Spencer. “There’s nothing here that’s referential to the world itself, except the shed.”
The Shed has its own website. And a film, produced by Columbus’ “Broad & High, recently featured “The Shed.”
